sitting in the silence
of unknowing
none of it is pretty
but all of it is beautiful
silence is a game
we have forgotten how to play
shrapnel has become
the currency of time
…….. (as difficult to remove as ever)
sarcasm and wit spin down
from two entirely different trees
evil is the root of the flower
whose petals we eat for breakfast
sacrifice always begins to wilt
just minutes after dinner
the moon is not there
for our amusement
it’s a seed that has yet
to be sown
.

Oh, Kelly, this is so special!!
I can feel the sitting and thought before and during the writing of this piece. And I can feel the image and emotion after reading it.
Wonderful!! Have a splendid 2013, dear!! ~ J

a seed yet to be sown…love this…also…sarcasm and wit spin down

Always such truth and alluring magic in your words.

Fantastic start to OLN! Brilliant, clever, effective…and to close with the moon…and the mystery of what will be harvested from the seed sown…looking forward to lots more in 2013! Happy New Year 🙂

I love this… the quiet of unknowing… a beautiful place to be. Happy New Year!
January 1st, 2013 at 3:11 pm
I like the part about the silence as a game we’ve forgotten how to play, and then the sarcasm and wit. I think a lot of people these days lack compassion and empathy… and always feel the need to be doing something.
January 1st, 2013 at 3:19 pm
Wow there is a lot in there.
“sacrifice always begins to wilt
just minutes after dinner” These lines speak to me and make me sad.
January 1st, 2013 at 3:28 pm
this resonates in me. concluding lines are especially vivid. much truth within. thank you~
January 1st, 2013 at 3:44 pm
I like the ending lines, cool images here ~
Wishing you Happy New Year ~

This is quite a commentary. I do agree that silence has become a game we have forgotten how to play. It is a lost art, unfortunately, in today’s world. Sad when so often people seem to speak without thinking, especially at holiday time.
January 1st, 2013 at 4:34 pm
I love your title and this:
“none of it is pretty
but all of it is beautiful
silence is a game
we have forgotten how to play”
I think the latter two lines make for a brilliant New Year’s challenge.
Really insightful thoughts, Miss M.

Wow … each stanza is deep… I love this poem… I really feel like I want to print it out and frame it. It is sobering and something to keep you thinking….
January 1st, 2013 at 5:00 pm
You put some great lines together in this one, Kelly. Very thought provoking.
January 1st, 2013 at 5:05 pm
So many great lines in this piece, I particularly liked “silence is a game
we have forgotten how to play” and “evil is the root of the flower
whose petals we eat for breakfast”, but the whole thing has a brilliant cadence and feel. Great stuff!

“none of it is pretty
but all of it is beautiful”
Ooh, I love that line. It’s all a matter of perception isn’t it? Well penned reflections, each stanza could stand on it’s own, but together gives us much to ponder. Nicely done.

Gorgeous work. The close is freaking brilliant.

Very interesting poem. Sometimes every two lines I have to think about what you are trying to convey and the thought process and its possibilities make the poem so much more enjoyable. I also loved your photo. Thanks for shareing:)

” evil is the root of the flower…whose petals we eat for breakfast” – loved this amongst the fine lines you have here… a special one… happy new year.. smiles…
January 1st, 2013 at 11:19 pm
sacrifice always begins to wilt
just minutes after dinner
this creates a great atmosphere
These excellent
couplets really set the poetry
in image stone for the looking
shrapnel has become
the currency of time
we have forgotten how to stand the silence
let alone enjoy it!
January 2nd, 2013 at 2:06 am
I love the flow of this – the way it draws you on to read the next line, but also the way it leaves space to think about what has gone before. Here’s hoping for more silence (in a good way)in 2013.
Happy New Year.
January 2nd, 2013 at 5:17 am

“sarcasm and wit spin down
from two entirely different trees”
O, MrsU, your narrator today is a fountain of discovery pooling into my new year. Sometimes I cannot see the forest for the trees, but here you give me new perspective and a seed.

PS: Do you know the book “Cloud of Unknowing,” description from Amazon: Written by an anonymous English monk during the late fourteenth century, “The Cloud of Unknowing” is a sublime expression of what separates God from humanity and is widely regarded as a hallmark of Western literature and spirituality. A work of simplicity, courage, and lucidity, it is a contemplative classic on the deep mysteries of faith.

Wow. Every couplet was powerful. Love the imagery and the message of this poem.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:04 am

from shrapnel to petals your images are wringing. beautiful.
January 2nd, 2013 at 1:28 pm
A mirror maybe, for us to hold up to ourselves. There is mystery n this, as well as many questions asked… I think some of the answers might not be that pretty”…but this is very very well written
January 2nd, 2013 at 4:35 pm
Right on! Beautiful! Wish I wrote this 🙂
January 3rd, 2013 at 1:11 am
