it’s a chick thing

I live with two men, a male dog and four cats, one of whom is male. So I am pretty much outnumbered. And I deal with it just fine most of the time.

There is a lot of sports. A lot. As in, there is always a television (or even 2 or 3) tuned in to a game of some sort or another. Always. If my husband is home, there is sports. Even if he is lying there, eyes closed, and snoring (which in my mind means he is asleep), there is sports. But if I try to sneak in and change the station, or turn it off, he wakes up and says, “What’s the score?” Seriously.

I don’t mind, really. It actually works out okay for me because then I have time to do the things I like. Artsy things. Writing. Reading. Knitting. Gardening. Folding laundry. (It’s still better than football).

But my house is small, so in the background, always: sports. I know things about sports because of this. Player’s names. (Best one ever: Jerricho Cotchery.) Player’s scandals. (I get a little tired of these.) Johnny Damon (Have you seen Johnny Damon?) Rules of the game. (Still learning, but sometimes I even surprise myself.) It is amazing what you pick up when you’re not really listening. Audio osmosis.

But recently, there’s a new thing that kind of threw me for a loop. My husband, the jock, has suddenly started watching…Gossip Girl. Oh yes, you read that correctly. And he giggles (yes giggles!) while watching it. He actually stays up past his bedtime when it’s on. And he keeps inviting me to come and watch it with him. (I’ve tried, but I just can’t. It’s that bad.)

Should I be worried? Is he finally getting in touch with his inner “sensitive-new-age-guy?”

I’ve checked his forehead, no fever. I’ve teased him about it, to no avail. Even his 25-year-old daughter thinks it a little, well, odd.

But…whatever.

I kind of like it when he giggles.

πŸ™‚ Can’t help you here. I’m a sports gal. I know who Johnny Damon is & how he shaved & cleaned up when the Yankees wanted him, though he’s not there anymore, and I understand football, and I even know which team’s baseball cap Tom Selleck wore when he did Magnum P.I, which, oddly enough, was the Detroit Tigers, the team Damon is now playing for. πŸ™‚ See? I have no clue about Gossip Girl – first I ever heard of it. I’ll track it down – maybe I, too, will giggle. teehee

Well, that’s the weird thing, I know a lot of that stuff too, just because it is always going on around me. And I still wish Johnny hadn’t shaved and cut his hair… I’ve grown accustomed to all the sports stuff, and actually, I like baseball and will occasionally sit down and watch a game with my husband…but Gossip Girl? I tried, really I did. I just couldn’t do it…

    I’ve never seen gossip girl….
but when we were watching “who wants to be a millionaire” the other morning {hubby is working from home} and the question asked which star fainted and fell at the end of her dance on dancing with stars, hubby immediately said “marie osmond” before the choices were even offered….

and I laughed and said “impressive” and “totally GAY” for you to even know that….and then we both laughed until it hurt.

and just in case anyone reads this and is bothered by my use of gay…we love gay people and one of best friends is gay and we use that word affectionately…so there πŸ™‚

hahaha…i used to wish my husband would watch less football, but I guess it’s a case of be careful what you wish for…

I nearly died reading this! Especially the Damon and giggling bits. I can’t even imagine Dad giggling. Can you record it please?

  • Debi Says:

If they pay you enough money, you shave & cut your hair. πŸ™‚

Oh.. I am so teasing Mr. Mediocrity the next time I see him. You can give him the heads up: Ask him, when did he become a girl? (Heheheh!)

  • Liz Says:

Oh my gosh. That picture is cracking me up.

TOO FUNNY!! I would wonder/worry if my husband ever got into Gossip Girls. Maybe yours likes it because he never had to deal with that ‘stuff’ when he was in high school???
    I’m with you. I just can’t watch…

kath and i both adore gossip girl. it is our soap opera. ask your husband, “don’t you just love chuck?”

    • Mrs. Mediocrity Says:

I told him that some of my blog friends said to ask him that, and he said “yes, there is a god!” whatever that means, hahaha! It’s a total soap opera, so out of character for him.

so funny…same here with my guy about sports…he’s snoring away, so i switch channels and all of the sudden, “what are you doing!”.

i haven’t caught him watching any girly shows….yet.

I know, I am not sure which is worse…football, basketball, golf, gossip girl….somehow, there must be a connection.

  • Toni Says:

That’s too funny about Gossip Girl and your hubby. Maybe he’s watching it for Blake Lively? She’s a young hottie with boobs and legs to die for…can I say boobs? When my now ex-husband and I got married he assured me that he never watched sports on TV, but it wasn’t long before that changed. Men and sports just seem to go together.

    • Mrs. Mediocrity Says:

Hahaha yes, that thought had occurred to me, but he is also really into the story line…and I am okay with the sports, I knew when I married him that it came with the package!

  • Anna Says:

OH this is funny………but if he starts “tailgating” to watch Gossip Girl an intervention might be necessary πŸ™‚
